University Medical Center at Brackenridge is home to the region’s only Level II Trauma Center. It is Texas’ busiest Level II Trauma Center, and the fourth-busiest Emergency Department in the state.
UMC Brackenridge has continued to upgrade its renowned trauma care. Last year alone, UMC Brackenridge added 18 critical-care rooms.
In fact, many clinicians point to UMC Brackenridge as the national leader in the development of civilian trauma care. On August 1, 1966, Charles Whitman climbed the University of Texas Tower and began shooting. No civilian emergency department had ever faced such unrelenting waves of patients suffering gunshot wounds. The lessons learned during that tragic event transformed emergency procedures hospitals have used—and still use today.
